I'm suprised you had not noticed in Snow Crash (unless you hadn't read it).  I worshiped Gibson's Neuromancer so decided to check out other top players in the genre.  His depiction of the remnants of the federal government was my first clue.  Also the effects of a world without the fed.  The major problems of that world reflect this: drugs trafficking, violent crime, and national security.  All are things conservatives love to throw money at.  And one more: Reagan is on then equivalent of the 1 dollar bill.

I've read all of Stephenson's stuff, but the Randian thing blew right past me!  (Makes whooshing gesture past head.)

And you're dead right, of course.  I hadn't even thought about Snow Crash.  Oddly enough, those are exactly the two things that Rand believed the government should do: protect the populace (police) and protect the nation (military).

Have you heard of Ayn Rand's book "Anthem"?
